Success criteria

The GNESD Steering Committee decided in late 2002 on a number of success criteria for the Network’s operation after one year. These included:

  • The GNESD network is operational and with a broad membership,
  • The website established with comprehensive information complementing and building on other partnerships, other means of communication, and info sharing,
  • Priority theme on “energy access” with focus on policy aspects and national and regional differences/similarities and experience sharing opportunities,
  • Impacts should be visible on e.g. developed relations and cooperation with other key partnerships and relevant international programmes,
  • Network is able to provide relevant overviews on regional basis of policy relevant options for addressing specific aspects of energy access,
  • Identification of proven policy measures for improving access and analysing their replication potential.

During the first half of 2004 the objectives listed above were reached.

The Work Programme for GNESD activities 2005 - 2007 was approved at the second Network Assembly 15 December 2004 in The Netherlands and focuses on increasing the impacts of the Network. This will be pursued in three ways:

  • Collaborating with other WSSD Energy initiatives (GVEP, EUEI & REEEP) and Energy Programmes of international organisations (UNEP, UNDP, World Bank and others)

  • Improving the ways of transmitting the findings of the analytical work both through increased support for regional networking by the members and through targeted dissemination of findings and stakeholder consultations

  • Engaging in direct capacity building, training and institutional support activities as part of the new more flexible approach to Network activities

The GNESD Steering Committee has furthermore decided that activities in the coming years should be developed with the aim of maintaining the current strengths of the Network while at the same time allow flexibility in implementing projects, either as a single GNESD Centre, or a partnership of several Centres.
