Global Network on Energy for Sustainable Development

GNESD is a UNEP facilitated knowledge network of Member Centres of Excellence and network partners worldwide. The main objective of GNESD is to carry out analysis  and produce policy advice on energy related issues which can be instrumental in reaching the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) by increasing access to clean and affordable energy.

After 12 years of active thematic research, outreach and advocacy work in energy for sustainable development, activities at the Global Network on Energy for Sustainable Development (GNESD) were fully completed on 31 December 2015. Overall, it had been an incredible journey with a number of great moments but also occasions for reflections and learning. The success achieved by GNESD over its lifespan were made possible to a great extent by the hard work by our GNESD Member Centres of Excellence whose contributions were invaluable and for which the Secretariat is indeed grateful. Special thanks to our two co-chairs for their inspiring leadership. Great appreciation goes to all our donors, including the governments of Denmark, Germany, France, Italy and the UK, as well as the UN Foundation and UNDP for their very generous financial support. Last, but not least, special thanks are due to the readers and external stakeholders for the visits to the website, utilization and citing of GNESD materials, participation in GNESD events, and invaluable comments and feedback through the years.

We welcome discussions and engagement with partners, both old and new, in proposal development and in new initiatives that complement past GNESD activities. We have recently been approached by several institutions in this regard and we look forward to exploring the new opportunities for collaboration. For more information and collaboration discussions, please contact: Emmanuel Ackom (emac@dtu.dk) or John Christensen (joch@dtu.dk).

Energy Access

Access to modern energy services such as clean cooking facilities, lighting and mechanical power are crucial for human well-being and a precondition for economic development. Access to these services is crucial to enable socio-economic development and achieve the UN MDGs. Read more about our activities on energy access here.

GNESD is publishing theme studies, technical country reports, policy papers and summaries for policy makers on a regular basis. Our work and publications are theme driven and carried out on the basis of Working Groups consisting of representatives from our member Centres of Excellence.
